Uganda High Commission Receives 18 Ugandans Rescued from Myanmar Scam Centers

Mae Sot, Thailand – 28th April 2025

In a continuous effort to rescue Ugandan nationals stranded in scam centers across Myanmar, the Uganda High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, accredited to Thailand and Myanmar, is pleased to announce the successful reception of 18 Ugandans today at the Second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at the Myanmar border.

The handover of the rescued Ugandans was made possible through a concerted collaboration between the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand, and also working closely with key non-governmental organizations, particularly Acts of Mercy International/Global Advance Projects Foundation, led by Mr. Judah Tanah and his associates, including Ms. Amy.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E. Dr. Betty Oyella Bigombe, who personally received the group at the border, expressed profound gratitude to the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand for their humanitarian commitment. She also extended special appreciation to the NGO partners for their critical support in identifying, rescuing, and facilitating the return of the stranded Ugandans.

Importantly, the Ambassador highlighted that Acts of Mercy International and Global Advance Projects Foundation generously funded the air tickets for the 18 Ugandans, ensuring that their repatriation process could proceed swiftly without financial burden to the rescued individuals.

Ambassador Bigombe used the occasion to appeal to the authorities in Myanmar and Thailand to intensify efforts to rescue the many Ugandans who remain trapped inside scam centers. She urged that the process of screening and repatriation be expedited to save more lives.

The 18 rescued Ugandans will tonight be accommodated at a Thai Government Shelter Home and are scheduled to depart for Uganda on 29th April 2025. They will travel aboard Ethiopian Airlines and are expected to arrive in Uganda on 30th April 2025, where they will reunite with their families and loved ones.

The Uganda High Commission reaffirms its commitment to working closely with regional partners, governments, and international organizations to ensure the continued safety and repatriation of all Ugandans caught up in scam centers across Myanmar.
